Isoprene \I"so*prene\, n. [Etymol. uncertain.] (Chem.) An oily, volatile unsaturated hydrocarbon (C5H8), obtained by the distillation of caoutchouc or gutta-percha, and used to make synthetic rubber by polymerization.
